Water Drinking
WATER, WATER AND NOT A DROP TO DRINK
Of all the myths I like ‘smashing', you would not think there is a myth about water, would you?
Well, there is. In fact there are a lot of myths and confusion about water and so it's about time we straightened them out.
Safe Water
Anyone who has been on holiday to a third world country can testify to the fact that you get very sick with diarrhoea or even dysentery if you are not careful to drink bottled or boiled water. We are so much luckier, we think, to live in a country where we can safely drink tap water. But are we? Of course sometimes accidents happen such as the contamination that occurred in Sydney a couple of years ago but MOSTLY the water that comes out of our taps is usually free of noxious microorganisms.
This is what sometimes represents a problem. Many people find that they are incredibly sensitive, to the point of becoming intolerant and even allergic to the chemicals that are added to tap water. Some of my patients with stomach and gut problems for instance, never get really better until they make absolutely sure they never drink tap water again.
People in the country who have rain water tank also have problems due to build up of slime, dead snakes and breeding frogs.
So should you panic? It's not necessary, here are some steps you can take to make sure that this ingredient indispensable to life is safe to drink.
Pure Water
At the very simplest you can simply boil drinking water this will insure that whether a rat dies in your tank or there is a disaster with the local water supply, the water that goes in your body is sterilised. Of course if you boil water for tea, coffee, soup or cooking rice or pasta that will make it safe also.
Boiling does not remove the added chemicals in the water though. If you want water free of chemicals you have two solution: filter it or buy it.
Water Filters
There are many different types of filters on the market. All of them have a filtering system, whether it is a membrane, charcoal or silicon beads through which the water goes through, leaving the unwanted components behind.
There are many different types of filters to suit all budgets and all situations but all have one thing in common: they all need their filters changed regularly. This is a really important factor that many people tend to forget, if you let your filter get saturated, not only will it not filter anymore but it will start dumping all the chemicals it has been gathering for weeks. Follow the manufacturer's advice, when in doubt it is better to change the filter too often rather than too little.
Which Water Should I Buy?
This is another dilemma. There are so many for sale nowadays. Very simply a lot of the cheap waters that come in 2, 4, 10 or more litre plastic containers are actually fine. Many of them are no spring water or mineral water, they are simply distilled water. That means that the water has been boiled down to its plain basics and all it has is H2O. Just water.
Isn't Mineral Water Better For You?
Mineral waters come from underground springs and therefore have different mineral contents depending on where they come from, this is why they claim to have healing properties. Genuine mineral waters should have their mineral contents listed on the label. A lot of them actually reveal that they contain a lot of salt! Unless you have noticed that certain mineral water actually has a positive effect on you (as happens with gut problems), you don't need to spend a lot of money on mineral water.
How Much Water Should You Drink?
If I had $10 every time someone asked me that question I would be a rich woman! This is my favourite myth: no, you do NOT need to drink two litres of water everyday. Drinking too much water, especially COLD water, will dilute all your water soluble nutrients and also will dilute your stomach acid, so you can't absorb your food properly. A lot of people who feel continually bloated also happen to drink water all day long.
Needs are different not only for each person but also for what this person is doing and according to the climate. So if you are working in your garden in the middle of summer you are going to need a lot more water than if you sitting at home in winter not doing much. Some days you might need a lot and some days you might need very little.
Another myth is that if you drink a lot of water you will ‘flush out' toxins from your system. Unfortunately, most toxins are actually NOT water soluble, that's why they stick around in your body, no amount of water will flush out the toxins from inhaled paint fumes for instance. On the other hand water does help break down alcohol, so it's a good idea to drink a lot of water when you are out and there is a danger you could over do it.
Did you know?
During the gold rush many miners felt victim to typhoid and dysentery but the Chinese miner didn't because they only drank tea!
