Miscarriage
THE BLIGHTED OVUM
A lot of my patients are trying to get pregnant: they get into a
really healthy diet and lifestyle, feel wonderful, get the magic
positive test and therefore are incredibly upset if they miscarry early
in the pregnancy. They get really worried because they are afraid this
may mean they may not be able to get pregnant again.
A very common scenario is when they have their first scan and the doctor tells them that they have a blighted ovum and have to have a curate. What this means is the embryo actually failed to develop and even without a curate, the body would dispose of it.
The thing is: this happens a lot. Before the days of ultrasound procedure, no one had a peek, some women knew they were pregnant because they may have been very regular and had a test as soon as they thought they were, but for many others, they might have thought that their periods were late and that they just had a late period which seemed heavier than usual.
Mother Nature does this a lot, to all creatures and also to plants. These early miscarriages do NOT mean that you are infertile but simply that this particular embryo was not viable. It is sad of course, but it is not a catastrophe.
What to do to avoid an early miscarriage
If, early in the pregnancy, you start spotting; drop everything and lie down. Get someone to make you a strong cup of Chamomile tea to which you add a teaspoon of honey and – wait for it - about twenty mls of Brandy, Whisky or your favourite spirit. The alcohol actually relaxes the smooth muscles of the body and stops the cramping. You may need to have two or three of those a day for a few days. This is a really old remedy and I can show you many little kids who are running around because their mums followed this advice.
What to do after a miscarriage or curate
If you were not able to stop a miscarriage this way and you either miscarried naturally or had to have a curate, take heart. As soon as you feel better, don't try to get pregnant straight away. Give your body a rest, go back on a good diet, resume taking supplements such as vitamins A, C and B12, Folic acid and calcium. It is a good idea to go to a naturopath so they can prescribe a herbal mixture for your personal case. Herbs such as Wild Pond Lilly, Golden Seal and Raspberry leaf are great to tone the uterus.
Resume gentle and sensible exercise; hard and excessive exercise actually takes away a lot of energy from your body at the early stages of pregnancy, when your whole system is gearing up to manufacturing its new little inhabitant. If you have a tendency to miscarry, avoid running, bicycle riding, high impact aerobics, bungy jumping, these sorts of things. Being a sloth is a better way to keep the baby in, rest a lot and have good night sleeps. And remember, it is not the end of the world. Soon, you will be pregnant again.
