Knee Problems
A few years ago a very fit and energetic woman came to see me.
- I am running in a marathon this Sunday but I hurt my knee. Can you fix it with acupuncture?
After I listened to the history of the problem (which was recurrent) and had a look at her knee, I explained that acupuncture could help with pain and inflammation but that to get better what her knee needed was complete rest.
- How long?
- About a month.
She looked at me as though I had lost my mind.
- A month! She exclaimed. I cannot stop running for ONE month!
So I gave her acupuncture and she ran that Sunday. She limped in on the Monday with a very painful knee.
- Will you have a rest now? I almost begged.
- All right I will.
But she only rested for a week and of course hurt her knee again. She went on to a continuously cycle of run/hurt/repair/run/ hurt/repair/run never resting long enough to effect a real healing.
This woman has not been able to run or even walk for long distances for years now. Eventually her knee became permanently and chronically sore.
I see this far too often: of course it is wonderful to exercise and be fit but when your body screams for you to stop listen to it or it will make you stop in very unpleasant ways. When you get all excited about a new exercise programme, it does seem frustrating to have to stop just because one bit of your body does not want to join in the fun. But the reality is if you give your body enough time to actually rest and repair you will be able to get back to play much faster than if you keep on aggravating the injury.
With all the knowledge and all the modern technology that we possess, sometimes the best thing we can do to heal ourselves is simply… nothing!
