Hypoglycaemia

Do you suffer periodically and even daily from these symptoms; Fatigue, shakiness, weakness in the legs, swollen feet, tightness in chest, constant hunger, migraine, generalised body pain, nervous habits, depression, irritability and confusion, sleepiness but insomnia once you've gone to bed?

Well, like a squillion other people (especially women) you are possibly suffering from hypoglycaemia.

WHAT IS IT?

There are three times of hypoglycaemia. Two of them are rare forms involving the pancreas but the most common form is called functional hypoglycaemia and is caused, I am sure you have just guessed it, by an inadequate diet which is too high in sugar and other refined carbohydrates and also by smoking and taking drugs.

THE PINGPONG GAME

This is how it works. One of the practice that creates hypoglycaemia is a light or non-existant breakfast: the blood sugar level remains at fasting level and in order to raise it quickly people have: sugar, cola, caffeine, cigarettes, cannabis, chocolate, a panic attack. I am not being flippant: all the above will cause the liver to release glycogen in the blood stream in one great big bang, as a result the pancreas will release insulin and the blood sugar level will go down again. You feel tired, listless, headachey, irritable… so you have more sugar, cola, cigarettes…. The liver sends out glycogen, the pancreas sends out insulin. They play ping pong like this all day: glycogen-ping, insulin-pong and you go up and down all day like a yoyo. I feel dizzy just writing about it!

DON'T BE A YOYO!

A lot of the symptoms of hypoglycaemia are often confused with mental illness, laziness or lack of motivation when in fact the problem is plain lack of energy due to intake of incorrect food.

The big danger is after many years of throwing insulin around extravagantly, the pancreas wears out and then another condition appears called HYPERglycaemia better known as DIABETES and this is not easily treated by diet.

The good news is you don't need complicated vitamins or rare herbs to stop your liver and pancreas from playing ping pong, it needs very little to avoid being a yoyo.

HOW TO CURE AND AVOID IT

Make Sure You Have:

  • A little protein with every meal
  • Complex carbohydrates such as whole-grains products and vegetables
  • Smaller meals more often (this does not mean eating between meals) rather than a quick or no breakfast, a bite at lunch and a big meal at night.
  • A good breakfast, because it will insure your blood sugar level starts on a good footing right from the beginning. One of my patients who simply decided to have cheese with her toast in the morning (instead of jam) told me that: “This piece of cheese saved my life!”

Make Sure You Avoid:

  • Sugary foods, especially in the morning
  • Caffeine
  • Alcohol
  • Tobacco
  • Cannabis (that's what the “munchies” are all about: the blood sugar level has gone to hell and you try hard to get it back!)
  • Snacks. Some people call themselves “grazers or browsers” unfortunately humans are not sheep, cows, goats or geese; if you constantly subsist on biscuits, chocolate, a cup of coffee, a drink of cola, lollies… Humans have not evolved to eat these foods continually; they are meant to have for fun on irregular occasions.

The more you have those ‘glycogen triggers' in the morning, the more your liver and pancreas will play ping-pong and the worse you will feel.

WHAT DO I DO IF I HAVE AN ATTACK?

You know how it is: suddenly you feel weak, you can think and you have this huge sugar craving and nothing is going to help but one of the above. In a case like this:

Have some fruit juice. This will take care of the immediate ‘low'

Follow with something like cheese and crackers or yogurt or bread and vegemite or a few nuts (well chewed – remember: you are not a bird, you do not have a giblet to grind nuts with). This way your blood sugar will start rising slowly but surely.

IT IS SO EASY TO FEEL GOOD

One of the great joys of my work is to see how people can help themselves out of very simple changes they can make in their life. A lot of people who think of themselves as low energy types or depressive will suddenly transform when they start eating the right way around and simply avoid the things one stuffs in one's mouth just out of habit. Very soon you will have so much energy and feel so good, you will be playing ping-pong instead of some of your body parts!
