HRT - Premarin
Some people believe that Premarin is a better Hormone Replacement because it is made from natural sources. Premarin has been on sale on a very large scale for over fifty years now and many women who use it to combat menopausal symptoms have no idea on how it is manufactured, and if they did they'd stop taking it.
Premarin is manufactured in the USA. It is made of a chemical extracted from the urine of pregnant mares. When a mare is four months pregnant she is tethered in a stall with restraining ropes and chain and a harness holding a cup for urine collection. The stalls have no bedding to discourage lying down (and spilling the urine) and water is given sparsely to obtain more concentrated urine. The mares have no access to outdoors, exercise areas and are not taken for walks. They stay in this stall barely moving for six months.
A few weeks after they have come out they give birth and are impregnated immediately. They are taken away from their foal at the age of three or four months and are back to being a urine making machine.
It is estimated that about 100,000 horses are used this way for the manufacture of Premarin. Because the foals have spent so little time with their mothers they are not properly socialised and therefore are not suitable as riding horses. So they are send to feed lots and then shipped to Japan where their meat is considered a delicacy.
A company has started collecting mare's urine in Australia. The mares are actually fitted with a collecting “nappy” and they live a normal life outdoors and are not separated from their foals prematurely. So ethically, this will be a better product when it becomes available. Still this is still a chemical and every woman should be weary of taking HRT.
So, there is natural and there is natural. I don't think anyone who knows about the manufacture of Premarin would want to take it. There are many really natural ways to cope with menopause and they are readily available.
