Hepatitis
HELP FOR YOUR LIVER
There are at the moment six diagnosable kind of hepatitis: A, B, C, D, E and G (that's right no ‘F'). I could make a cheap joke and say that we'll ran out of alphabet letters soon but I won't because hepatitis is a hideous condition to have, it is incredibly common and becoming more so. Hepatitis B can even be fatal. Non-viral hepatitis is caused by poor diet and lifestyle.
Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver caused by a virus. The symptoms are the same for all types of hepatitis but with different degrees of intensity. They range from aching muscles, weakness, abdominal bloating, headache, loss of appetite, nausea, going to extreme fatigue which is handicapping to the sufferer and often causes depression. Many people who suffer from hepatitis will tell you that they have ‘never been the same again'. Some have to go on sickness benefits because they are too sick to hold a job.
What Happens?
Imagine a long war: at first you have to try and control the enemy, but then because the war continues, all your resources go in the fight and you can no longer produce the basic necessities of life. The virus responsible for hepatitis cause many toxins to build up in the liver, too many and too fast for the liver to eliminate. Eventually the liver can no longer attend to all its other functions: digestion, vitamins storing, blood manufacturing…
So at first you are sick because of the disease itself, then because of the damage it has caused to the liver. Even people who contracted the disease without being sick and are now immune find that they are just not as healthy and lively after such an attack.
Help For Your Liver
The liver is a valiant organ. It will try and do its best to regenerate itself but you need to help it.
To help the liver you first need to stop getting in its way. Most
people know that alcohol is bad for the liver but alcohol is not the
only baddy. When people are acutely sick with a liver problem they know
not to eat the things that are bad for them like coffee or greasy foods
because it simply makes them sick to even think about these foods. When
the acute stage is passed however you still need to be away from
certain things because even if they don't make you nauseous instantly,
they stop your liver from working properly and you are just chronically
ill.
The Baddies
So we all know about alcohol. What are the other baddies?
Fats: Fatty, greasy foods get in the way of the liver and that does not just mean fish and chips. Remember that biscuits are one third saturated fats, chocolate is very fatty, so is its substitute: carob and many confectioneries and so called ‘health bars' are actually full of fat.
Sugar: Sugar, lollies, sweets, soft drinks, jams, dried fruit; all sugar rich foods stop the liver from detoxifying and therefore will keep the liver unwell.
Refined Carbohydrates: White flour products (white bread, white pasta, white rice) aggravate the liver. If you go out and somebody serves you white rice, don't worry too much about it, but at home made sure you have the wholemeal variety.
Drugs: Duh! I hear you say. Well, I am not just talking about heavy drugs. Medical drugs can be really hard on the liver, so if you are on medication you should have regular liver function tests. Headache pills can be really hard on the liver, so don't take them too often. Many people think that cannabis is inoffensive, but cannabis is a sure way to kick a down a straggling liver.
Smoking: Apart from the fact that tobacco is not that crash hot for you, modern tobacco is LACED with dozens of chemicals, one more toxic than the other and that means tobacco for rollies too.
Environmental Chemicals: This does not mean just the stuff that industry spews in the environment. I mean the home environment. There are many sprays, paints and cleaning agents that will kick the poor liver further. When you use those, make sure you wear a proper mask with a filter. Try and substitute bicarbonate of soda and white vinegar for some of your cleaning agents.
Brassicas: This is one time when I make friends!
Vegetables from the cabbage family (cabbage, cauliflower, Brussels
sprouts and broccoli) have a sulphur compound in them that irritates
the hell out of a ailing liver.
The Goodies
Obviously a clean diet with fibre, whole grains, lots of vegetables, small but regular amounts of protein and two or three pieces of fruit a day will go a long way to help the liver repair itself.
It is not a good idea to have too many complicated supplements when your liver is sick because, well, they aggravate the liver too!
There are however a couple of herbs that are wonderful for the liver. The best is St Mary's Thistle (Silybum marianum) and it's a good idea to drink lots of Dandelion and Chicory root coffee.
Vitamin C is wonderful because of its detoxifying powers. Take half a teaspoon of the powder a day.
There is one anti-oxidant that I prescribe to all my liver sufferers. It's called Glutathione. If you are going to take only one supplement to help your liver, this is it.
