Headaches and Migraine
NOT THIS LIFE, I HAVE A HEADACHE!
Stressed out women come to my clinic telling me they have suffered from headaches and migraines all their life. They have tried everything and been everywhere and inevitably have to resort to severe medication for relief. These women have miserable lives because they always feel sick, they have no energy, and they tend to suffer from PMS. Of course they are not a barrel of fun to be around: their kids and husbands have to tread softly because ‘mum has one of her headaches'. They seem resigned that this is their lot in life; yet, when they follow my advice, they are usually better within a couple of weeks and soon the headaches disappear altogether.
What is the miracle treatment?
There is NO miracle treatment! In ninety per cent of cases (and in
24 years of practice I have thousands of cases to document this) the
problem with these women is that their headaches are due to starvation.
It Start With The Teen Years
When girls start becoming aware that boys are more than the annoying creature they know in their brother and they start having the notion that they must become attractive; it is an unfortunate fact of our culture that the meaning of attractive and desirable is conveyed by stick looking models and in order to achieve this desirability girls begin the ridiculous love-hate relationship they have with food. This is usually when the headaches start.
The Vicious Circle
It's very simple: when you don't eat the blood sugar goes down, the body gives you a headache for you to pay attention and feed it because the brain is starved of nutrients. If you don't, the headache gets worse. If you take a headache medication, it will relieve the immediate symptom but the body will continue to suffer in silence and devise other ways to get your attention:
- Tension will build up in your neck and shoulders, this tension cuts down proper blood flow to the head and bang! You'll get a different kind of headache.
- You'll probably have more potent medication to shut this one up, as a result your liver will start getting toxic and you will get headaches out of that.
- Because of the role the liver has in hormone distribution, if you keep taking medication, you'll start having hormonal imbalance, so the headaches will fluctuate with your menstrual cycle.
- Because you feel bad most of the time you probably have high caffeine drinks such as coffee or cola (yes, so called ‘diet' colas have a very high level of caffeine) to keep you going. CHOCOLATE is also full of caffeine. Caffeine is very addictive, and when you don't have it, you'll get a caffeine withdrawal headache!
Stop The Madness!
The best and simplest way to get rid of your headaches is to first START EATING! Yes, have breakfast for starters and make sure you never skip lunch. This way you will get rid of the low blood sugar level headache.
Next, cut down, or preferably cut OUT, the caffeine drinks and the chocolate. Sure, that will give you a bad headache to start with but it will insure that you won't get caffeine headaches in the future.
Detoxify your liver by having lots of vegetables and vitamin C and of course cutting down on alcohol. B complex vitamins are also good (such as in yeast tablets) and, if you have PMT, take vitamin B6 (250 mg a day for a few months), this way you will stop both liver toxicity and hormonal imbalance headaches.
Because of long term neck and back tension, you will need to work on your muscles and joints but you don't need to have expensive osteopathic or chiropractic work. Learn how to relax by doing stretching exercises, yoga, walking or swimming. This way you will get rid of muscular and tension headaches.
What! No Herbs?
That's right! I am NOT going to give you a miracle herb. Next time your body demands your attention by kicking you in the head, feed it first of all and then follow the advice above. If in spite of all of this you still have headaches, then you should have them investigated by both a GP and a naturopath. Of course if you never suffer from headaches and you suddenly do, this should be investigated to rule out the possibility of medical emergencies such as meningitis.
Remember that strong, healthy, vibrant, creative women don't starve themselves; they give their body the necessary fuel for all the things they want to do. So don't miss out on life because of chronic headaches caused by poor management.
