Fasting
Why do some people rave about fasting? Is it good or bad for you?
The answer to this is simple: fasting is VERY bad for you. In the case where people are very ill with an acute disease with a high temperature (such as pneumonia for instance), they can't help but fast because the body is marshalling all its energy to fight the infection. Mind you these people absolutely need fluids (that's why they are put on a drip if they go to hospital) and, if they were at home, they would do well with a nutritious broth. As soon as they emerge from their acute state they should start taking a little food, in fact their well being is often measured in their increased appetite.
The reason why some people think fasting voluntarily and over a long period of time made them feel great is simply because fasting in this manner puts the body in a state of panic. This causes the adrenal glands to release a lot of hormones, this has the same effect that an injection of cortisone would have: it stops pain and inflammation. It does not last long however, because this practice causes adrenal exhaustion: very soon they will feel twice as bad.
