Endometriosis
Every week, women come into my practice in tears. They suffer from
excruciating lower abdominal pain, which happens either before, during
or even a week after the period. This is not
ordinary period pain, the symptoms get gradually worse and worse and
include back pain, pain during intercourse, constipation or painful
bowel movements, premenstrual spotting, heavy menstrual flow. Many
women who suffer from the problem find that they cannot conceive,
especially women who have not had children. Because this problem is
chronic and associated with the fear that they may never have children,
these women tend also to be depressed and anxious. This, in turn, makes
people around them think they are difficult to live with or even
believe they are hypochondriacs, which of course makes the situation
worse.
What Is It?
These women suffer from a problem, which strikes one in ten Australian women: endometriosis. In this condition cells from the uterus break away and implant themselves in the pelvis (in the ovaries, cervix, appendix, bladder and bowels). Where they bleed and cause inflammation, cysts and scar tissue, which cause the dreadful pain. Women between the ages of 20 and 45 are more commonly affected, but even teenagers and post-menopausal women have been suffering from it.
Unfortunately we are not quite sure about what actually causes it but the statistics show that it is a very common problem in western countries while it was almost unheard of in more ‘primitive' cultures. However, one of the theories is that it can be caused by intercourse during menstruation, which forces blood into the fallopian tubes. Smokers and women under a lot of work stress tend to be more prone.
It is interesting to note that women in ‘primitive' cultures have of course less of the toxic poisons we have to deal with but in most of those ‘primitive' cultures, sex during menstruation is taboo.
The Western Medicine Treatment
Many doctors are not really sympathetic to ‘women's problems' and simply prescribe painkillers. When endometriosis is officially diagnosed, the drugs that are usually prescribed are:
Hormonal pills, which suppress oestrogen. But this often causes an artificial menopause.
Male hormones, which can have side effect such as deepening of the voice and facial hair growth.
Laser therapy to burn the endometriosis or cutting via a laparoscopy. These are unfortunately a short-term procedure.
Eventually many women get so desperate they have a hysterectomy.
What Not To Do
Taking painkillers regularly is one of the worst things you can do: painkillers, by masking the immediate pain will allow the condition to develop to the point where no pain killer can offer any relief at all.
Ignoring the problem hoping it will go away. It won't. Have yourself properly diagnosed if you have these problems. If you don't have endometriosis, no harm done.
The Natural Way
There is a lot you can do to stop and reverse endometriosis if you start early enough , which is why it is so important to not ignore the early symptoms. Diet change is very important:
Reduce animal fats to a minimum. Have fish rather than meat. Have a high fibre diet with lots of fresh vegetables, fruit and whole grains. Avoid dairy products such as milk, cream and fatty cheeses but yogurt and lean cheeses such as ricotta are very good.
Get a herbalist to prescribe herbs: Chaste tree, Yarrow, Meadowsweet, Cramp Bark, Blue Cohosh and Dong Quai are excellent for this condition. High dosages of vitamin E are also good. Again it is better to ask professional advice for your own personal needs. Acupuncture helps keeping it under control.
Go to counselling. Women who suffer from endometriosis and have difficulty becoming pregnant, become more and more anxious, which makes their condition worse. It is important to learn how to emotionally and mentally deal with the problem.
Change Your Lifestyle
Stress makes the condition worse: learn how to relax with meditation and yoga; change your job; change your partner; change your sport. Take time to look after yourself and your health. Stop smoking and reduce your alcohol intake – especially when the pain strikes. Avoid cannabis as this works like a painkiller, less pain today means more tomorrow.
It is easy to think that it is just too difficult to change what you are doing; but being in chronic pain is sheer hell. You can get on top of endometriosis but you need to be serious about fighting it back.
