Ear Problems

It seems almost inevitable that almost every little child will suffer from earache and that the infernal sickness-antibiotics-sickness never ends and becomes the bane of your life.

Well folks, there is very good news. The Dutch have done some pretty serious investigating and found that the constant use of antibiotics for earache is not only useless, because the ears would get better anyway, but counterproductive because the practise creates stronger bugs which do not respond to antibiotics treatments when they are needed for serious infections.

I am glad of the good news, I hear you say but what can I do when my child is actually sick?

Have no fear, Granny is here!

  • Bring down the temperature by sponging the child with tepid (not cold) water and giving Lime Flowers tea or Catmint tea with honey.
  • Give plain Vitamin C powder (1/4 of a teaspoon) in water or fruit juice.
  • Give the child Cod Liver Oil to boost up the immune system: one teaspoon a day.
  • Attend to the ears themselves.
  • Essential oil of Lavender is not only sufficient, but safe as well. You can apply it straight into the ear with a dropper.
  • Lay the child on her side and apply approximately five to ten drops in her ear. I say approximately because most of it will disappear anyway.
  • Then, plug the ear with cotton wool and repeat the operation with the other ear. It is best to do this at night-time of course, but during the crisis you should repeat it twice or three times a day.
  • Clean the ears with a cotton bud before the each application.
  • Sometimes the child will not respond to the lavender oil treatment. In this case use garlic oil.
  • Buy some garlic oil capsules and crack them open in the child's ear and squirt. You might need two or three capsules per ear to make an impression. Plug with cotton wool as before.

Even though your child will smell like a little garlic prawn (sorry!) the antibiotic effect of the garlic will do wonders.

For people whose children spend a lot of time swimming I suggest that you put oil in your child's ears BEFORE they get into the water. You do not need to use lavender for this any vegetable oil is suitable (NOT baby oil). The oil prevents the water from coming into contact with the mucous membrane of the ear and therefore protects it.

Of course, following an ear infection a child should not be allowed to swim for at least a week to ten days and do take your child to a friendly doctor to keep an eye on those ears.

It's amazing how with these simple remedies we can avoid those horrible repetitive earaches.

WHY DO OLDER PEOPLE OFTEN BECOME DEAF?

Well, according to the traditional medicine of Outer Mongolia, it's because they have too much sex. It makes sense doesn't it? Retired, not much to do...... Only kidding! The truth is that the ears have minuscule hair like things on the ear bones that are receptors, thousands upon thousands of them in neat little rows. Unfortunately they are very fragile and if destroyed cannot be replaced.  Trauma, chronic infection and loud continuous noise destroy them (that's why rock musicians suffer from industrial deafness).Of course with time more are destroyed. So there you are it's plain wear and tear on the receptors. I prefer the Outer Mongolian explanation myself; so next time your Granny complains about her hearing you can tease her that you know what she's been up to!

Q&A: I HAVE RINGING IN THE EARS. THE DOCTOR SAID IT WAS TINNITUS AND THAT THERE WAS NOTHING THAT COULD BE DONE. IS IT TRUE? IT'S DRIVING ME NUTS. J.R. MILLER OF ELIZABETH, S. A.

Dear “J.R.”, Unfortunately you have not told me wether you are male, female or what your age is! When older males suffer from tinnitus, this has often been caused by industrial noise, which has caused damage to the structure of the ear. The longer the person has been subjected to the noise the more difficult it is to repair. In this case the wearing of a hearing aid sometimes helps, so does playing soft music gently at night to mask the sound of tinnitus.

For people who have NOT suffered industrial noise and in whom the ringing in the ear has just started or is intermittent, the underlying cause of tinnitus must be investigated. It could be any one of a list of fancy medical names but in my experience, people who are exhausted and run down often suffer from ringing in the ear. It is a bit like the body tolling an alarm bell. The best thing to do is to rest, recover and start treating yourself well with good nutritious food, quiet times and lots of rest. Avoid all caffeine (chocolate, cola drinks, coffee), alcohol and junk food in general. Acupuncture is an almost instant cure in the early stages of tinnitus caused by exhaustion. And, I hate to tell you this, loud music causes it too, so Mum was right, turn down that radio!
