Children and Television

Is Your Child A TV Addict?

Does your child watch more than one to two hours of television per day? Do you watch television with your child, or know what your child is watching? Do you discuss television shows with your child? Does your child have a television in his or her room? Do you monitor Internet and/or computer use? Is this the 21st century version of the Spanish Inquisition? No, these are questions the American Academy of Paediatrics recommends doctors ask parents when attending to sick children.

The truth is many illnesses, especially emotional and mental disorders, statistically increase with the amount of TV children watch. How is it so?

At the physical level, children who watch a lot of television or spend a lot of time in front of a computer monitor are subjected to huge amount of radiation. Especially considering the fact that children usually watch TV very close to the monitor. This is bad for anyone, but with growing children, the damage can be greater because they are growing. These radiations affect the immune system and the nervous system as well as the endocrine system, which it does via the eyes to the pituitary gland.

Of course all the time spend slumped in front of the TV is time not spend exercising outside in the fresh air and this affects lungs, circulation and bone growth.

At the mental and emotional level, the visual and aural stimulus that TV subjects little kids to prevents a proper growth and linkage of nerve pathways in the brain and this causes problems such as attention deficit disorders. This is regardless of the programmes, even if your kids only watch intelligent programmes (and you would be hard pressed to find one whole hour of those every day), it’s the continuing bombarding of sound and images that causes the problems.

The brain often tries to tidy up this overload at night and this is why many children have unexplainable nightmares. Of course if the child is sleeping within ear shot of a TV set, then not only can the mind not do any tidy up but more material accumulates unconsciously.

How much is too much?

According to the American Academy of Paediatrics children under two should not watch television at all, because this is the time when those precious connections are laid in the brain. Older children should not watch television more than one hour a day.

I know you hate me when I tell you these sorts of things, but children are so precious and their development decides on what sort of adult they will become. Every so often, allow yourself and your kids a TV binge but don’t be a slave to the ‘idiot box’. Replace TV watching by games, reading, crafts and exercise and very soon every one will be healthier and cleverer! (not to mention richer by not buying all the rubbish advertised on TV!)
