Babies - Fruit Juice

Please do not wean babies on fruit juices. Fruit juices are really bad for them, they are full of sugar (yes, even if the box says "sugar free" fructose is sugar), which makes them behave like they are on a sugar drip. At such an early stage in their life they train the liver to release glycogen and the pancreas to release insulin and before you know it: early onset diabetes!

Fruit juices suppress the appetite, develop a sweet tooth and cause great nutritional imbalance. Only give babies and toddlers water. Young children should also not be ‘pumped up’ with juices, don't put those carton things in their lunch box.

Save fruit juices to go with the afternoon snack when they come home from school, or when they play sport. Vegetable juices are too concentrated for little children, they can only have small amounts (50 mls) cut down with water and not too often. If they are sick, vegetable broth is easier to digest.
