Arthritis
A few years ago two lovely ladies in their sixties came to see me. They were sisters and they both suffered from arthritis in their hands, feet and knees. This would make anybody miserable, but because they both used to be very passionate about their hobbies (one was a keen gardener, the other played golf) they were ultra miserable as they could no longer have fun. They were both taking aspirin and other anti-inflammatory drugs but they had to take more and more with less and less relief.
I put them on a programme and within weeks they were back pulling out weeds and swinging a club. They never looked back.
Was it a miracle cure? Nope. It was a very simple programme involving diet, herbs and a couple of supplements. And you too can benefit from it.
Which kind is it?
There are over 100 or more different kinds of arthritis. Acute Arthritis, Allergic Arthritis, Chronic Arthritis. Degenerative Arthritis, Gonorrhoeal Arthritis, Gouty Arthritis, Haemophilic Arthritis, Menopausal Arthritis, Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Tuberculous Arthritis, just to name a few. I would need a whole book to explain all of these however they all have a lot in common. Inflammation of one or more joints, pain, swelling, stiffness, misshaping of hands and feet, muscular atrophy, and of course tiredness, irritability not to mention the depression that comes from being constantly in pain and unable to do the things one used to do.
What causes it?
Obviously the original causes are as varied as the different kinds of arthritis but the cause of the actual pain and damage is always the same: deposits of toxins and harmful acids (such as uric acid) in the joints or tissues. Basically your body is producing toxins faster than it can detoxify itself and your system becomes polluted.
What to do about it?
First of all it is important to know what kind of arthritis it is. If it is caused by a bacterial infection (such as Gonorrhoeal Arthritis), then you will need antibiotics to kill the infection before you get onto this programme. But if you have the kind of arthritis that is dismissed as: “It’s normal at your age, take these pain killers and get used to it”, then you can do really well with the following programme.
Cleanse First
Every three months go on a Cleansing diet. For a whole week eat only: brown rice, fish (and seafood) and vegetables. Drink only herbal teas, water or vegetable broth. NO tea, coffee or alcohol, not even fruit, except for grapefruit, lemon, lime and their juices. This is not a fast: eat as much as you want.
The first time you will do this you will feel like hell and you will hate me. If it is too hard to do for a whole seven days, do it for two days every week, staying on the maintenance programme the other five.
Maintenance
From there on
Have Lots of:
- Fish and Seafood- fresh or tinned –four or five times a week (These Omega Three oils again. Gee! They are good for you!)
- Vegetables, especially green vegetables
- Vegetable juices.
- Rice: brown is better but any kind of rice is good.
- Wholegrain bread. Use wholemeal flour in your cooking.
- Herbal teas and vegetables juices.
Be Moderate With
- Meat: preferably eat lamb, goat or kangaroo (which are non inflammatory). Don’t eat beef more than once a week, veal is better. Unless they are organic, pork and chicken are no good and even then only have them once a week or less.
- Fruit: Pears without skin are good and so are grapefruit. Don’t have more than two pieces of fruit a day.
- Pasta: only have small amounts and not more than twice a week.
Avoid The Following Foods:
- Processed meats (like salami or devon)
- Too much meat (especially pork, chicken and beef)
- Alcoholic beverages, especially wine.
- Soft drinks with additives and artificial colours, especially cola drinks.
- Peanuts.
- Preservatives, especially MSG.
- Too much fruit, especially oranges.
- Dairy products (except for natural yogurt)
- Cakes, biscuits and pastries
- Coffee
- Lollies and chocolate.
Natural Remedies:
There are a lot of herbs that work really well, for a personalised formula you need to see a herbalist of course. However you can get herbs such as Meadow Sweet or Devil’s Claw from your health food shop. Celery Seed extract is also good but you need to take it with Dandelion tea or coffee. Ginger and Turmeric are great natural anti-inflammatories: include them in your diet. Even glazed ginger will help. And of course Pennywort (Centella asiatica) is excellent too.
Exercise:
It is important to keep the body moving: aquarobic and swimming are the best because they allow more movement with less pain.
Local Application:
This is personal. Some people prefer cold packs on their joints, while others prefer hot packs. The ointments you usually get create heat which work as counter irritant.
For a home made lotion try this:
Grate one hundred grams of ginger, put it in a jar. Top it up with olive oil. Add three table spoons of Turmeric. Stir. Leave it to macerate for a week, strain and use as a rubbing oil.
The trick is: once you have detoxified your system, your body will soon let you know which foods aggravate your pain. This is not being allergic, it’s just learning how your body responds. After you have been free of pain for some months you will be able to “afford” the occasional drink or naughtiness. Some people may think that this is hell but it really depends on what you prefer: continuous pain or a well functioning body. The two sisters I mentioned knew what their choices were: they preferred being active and pain free to eating cakes and drinking brandy.
