Our Product Philosophy

How many times have you looked at the ingredients of so called “natural” products and find that the list was lengthy litany of complicated names? A lot of products have wonderful marketing: glorious photographs of endless fields of flowers or herbs or waterfalls. Wonderful names and claims yet their products only have a really small amount of real botanicals or essential oils and they are all full of solidifiers, fillers, preservatives, etc…

Here is, for example, the list of ingredients from a very famous and respected brand of “natural” products. This is their hand cream:

WATER, SHEA BUTTER, GLYCERIN, DIMETHICONE, CETEARYL ALCOHOL, PEG-100 STEARATE, GLYCERYL STEARATE, POLYACRYLAMIDE, LINSEED EXTRACT, HONEY EXTRACT, PROPYLENE GLYCOL, PHENOXYETHANOL, COCONUT OIL, OLIVE OIL STEROLS, C13-14 ISOPARAFFIN, CETEARETH-33, ALCOHOL DENAT, CHLORPHENESIN, METHYLPARABEN, FRAGRANCE, ALTHEA OFFICINALIS ROOT EXTRACT, PRUNUS FRUIT EXTRACT, LAURETH-7, ROSMARINUS OFFICINALIS (ROSEMARY) LEAF EXTRACT, HELIANTHUS ANNUUS (SUNFLOWER) SEED OIL, BENZYL ALCOHOL, XANTHAN GUM, BENZYL BENZOATE, CITRONELLOL, HYDROXYISOHEXYL 3-CYCLOHEXENE CARBOXALDEHYDE, COUMARIN, BUTYLPHENYL METHYLPROPIONAL, LINALOOL, HEXYL CINNAMAL, ALPHA-METHYL IONONE, LIMONENE

The above, far from being the exception, is very much like a lot of the ‘natural’ products available on the market.

I have a very sensitive skin, which rebels at the touch of chemicals so I originally started making my own products because I found nothing that was gentle enough for my own use.

Even if I don’t ‘react’ in a bad way, I hate the feeling some creams give me: as if I have just put plastic film on myself and my skin can’t breathe. To me a good product should be gently and efficiently absorbed into the skin, obviously cause no bad reaction, give you a feeling of delight and finally a great result: improved skin, all over your body. But let’s take it from the top:

Water

That is the base of everything. All beauty products (except those which are 100% oil based) have a certain component of water (some are 90% water) and the water used is of course tap water with its accompaniment of chemicals.

The water we use is rainwater collected on our property. Since we are hundreds of kilometres from heavy industry, the rainwater is pretty good. All the same we have it triple filtered and then it is boiled to make it sterile.

Simple Creams

Have you every wondered what Sorbolene is? And all these lotions “enriched” with vitamins and herbs? Well most of them are Sorbolene or Aqueous cream and they are simply made with: water, oil, emulsifying wax and preservatives. Mostly the oils are petrochemicals; even those who use vegetable oils usually put lots of preservatives in them. Now you know why they feel like plastic on your skin: they are.

To make my Aqueous cream base, I use nothing but rainwater, vegetable oils (these vary depending on what I want to achieve, but I am very fond of using Macadamia oil: because it is rich, nourishing, full of Omegas and vit E and it’s local! I also use organic Apricot kernel, Jojoba, Sunflower, Grapeseed and Olive oil), I use an organic emulsifying wax and for preservatives I use vitamin E, vitamin C and/or Rosemary extract.

My ‘simple’ creams are Just Peachey, One Hell of a Bash and Fire and Brimstone.

Since I only make small batches they usually get gobbled up quickly, so I have never had a chance to find out how long they last; except for several bottles of body lotion that we found at the back of a cupboard when we moved. Six years later it was just as good and smelled as sweet.

Oil Based Creams and Ointments

For these I also use organic oils: Apricot Kernel, Macadamia, Jojoba, Rosehip, all depends on what I am trying to achieve. Of course oils are liquid so how do I make them fit to stand in a jar? Easy, just add organic Cacao or Mango Butter, just 10% added to the oil is sufficient to make it a delectable ointment. I particularly because it is smooth and moisturising and I love to stick my head in the bucket when I use it: it smells so delicious.

My oil base ointments are Eternal Youth and Beauty, Baby’s Bum, and Universal Panacea.

Emulsions

Emulsions are of course a mixture of oil and water creams. They are more difficult to make but the results are stunning. They allow the use of both fat-soluble nutrients such as essential oils and vitamins A&E and also the use of water-soluble nutrients such as herbal extracts, vitamin C and seaweed extracts.

My emulsion products are Satin Skin, Snow Bite, Full Bloom,
Lustrous, Velvet glove, Décolletage.

Herbal Extracts

All herbal extracts used are of the highest quality, they are the very same I use in my practice to make herbal medicines for my patients.

Essential Oils

Essential oils are always sourced from the best suppliers with impeccable ethics. Whenever possible I use organically produced oils. I never use synthetic oils

How Do They Work?

This may appear like a silly question. How do they work? You put them on and your skin feels great, right? Yes, but there is more. Being a naturopath, my emphasis is on healing, not only at the physical level but also at the emotional level. My choice of herbal extracts and essential oils is always made to treat both the body and the emotions.

Are They Safe?

The first thing they need to be is safe. From the above I hope you have realised that given the quality of raw materials we use the products will be safe. But they are also safe in the fact that I do not use any controversial herb or essential oil. Unless something has been proven to be safe, I do not use it.
As far as babies are concerned, the baby formulae are also all designed with their delicate skin in mind. All formulae are safe to be used in pregnancy unless otherwise stated.

Testing, Testing...

It should go without saying but I’ll say it anyway: all products have been tested on and used by (willing) humans for almost three decades.
